Limerick

Situated on the banks of the river Shannon, the University of Limerick is situated just 3 miles from the centre of the historic city of Limerick, which began as a Viking settlement (Hlymreker) around 922. Ireland's third city, Limerick was granted its city charter in 1189, making it the oldest chartered city in Ireland and Britain. Historic landmarks include St Mary's Cathedral (11th Century), King John's Castle (13th Century), the Treaty Stone (where the Treaty of Limerick was signed in 1691 following the Battle of the Boyne), and nearby, Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, Lough Gur (Stone Age settlement), Knappogue Castle, etc. The city is also an ideal base for touring the west of Ireland, including the Burren National Park and Lough Derg.
