The University is the focal point of the National Technological Park which extends over 650 acres of parkland on the banks of the Shannon. Over eighty organizations, ranging from multi-national manufacturing companies to small local service companies are located here, employing approximately 2,100 people. Originally set up as a centre of excellence in science and technology, the University has expanded in recent years and now includes Music, Education, and Sports Science in addition to Business and Humanities. The University itself houses the Hunt Museum, which contains an important collection of antiquities, the National Self-Portrait collection, and a newly completed Concert Hall.
